Collaborating with the Nigerian Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), judges were appointed to evaluate entries.
These prizes celebrate groundbreaking achievements, foster innovation, and promote Nigerian creativity and intellectualism on a global stage.
History of The Nigeria Prizes
In 2003, NLNG’s Board of Directors approved the establishment of prestigious prizes for science and literature, marking the beginning of a transformative initiative to celebrate Nigerian excellence.
A group of 14 distinguished scholars in arts and sciences was convened to design the framework for what would become Africa’s biggest and most respected awards.
Over the years, the prizes have been adjudicated by renowned figures such as the Emeritus Prof Umaru Shehu, Prof Anya O. Anya, Prof Gabriel Ogunmola, Emeritus Prof Ayo Banjo, Prof Dan Izevbaye, Professor Zaynab Alkali, and more.
In 2010, the administrative process was reformed, replacing committees with Advisory Boards comprising distinguished Nigerians.
Today, the Advisory Boards oversee the prizes, with winners announced in October at a Grand Award Night to commemorate NLNG’s first LNG export on October 9, 1999. The NLNG Grand Award Night celebrates winners, bringing together the nation’s brightest minds in science, literature, and literary criticism.
The Science Prize Advisory Board is chaired by Professor Barth Nnaji. Other members are Chief Dr Nike Akande and Professor Yusuf Abubakar.
.The Literature Prize Advisory Board, which oversees both Literature and Literary Criticism prizes, is chaired by Professor Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbot. Other members of the Advisory Board are Professor Olu Obafemi and Professor Ahmed Yerima.
